Angelina Jolie Turns To The Dark Side In Disney's Maleficent! Eviltastic ‘Maleficent’ Poster HERE!
Stand back, you fools!
If there's ever been a poster that's conveyed such a sentiment, its Disney's first one-sheet for "Maleficent," the highly anticipated live-action riff on "Sleeping Beauty," starring Angelina Jolie as the titular villainess (a close second: every Jason Statham movie poster).
Angelina Jolie playing Maleficent might be Disney’s best pairing of actor and role since Johnny Depp played a certain pirate. Of course, Disney had to be dragged kicking and screaming into accepting Depp’s eccentric performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow — until it made them billions of dollars. Jolie’s portrayal isn’t likely to ruffle as many feathers, especially since she looks amazing as the Sleeping Beauty villain who curses the young Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning.)
Jolie's bewitching blue-green eyes (is she part Na'vi?) are in full pierce-mode, her bright lips could shame the reddest rose, and whoa! Check out the sweet headgear on queenie:
This isn't the first peek we've gotten at Jolie's stylish sorceress — a very similar first still of her circulated way back in June 2012, and the actress appeared at Disney's D23 exhibition in August to unveil the first footage from the film.
But it's sure to be the first of many more promotional materials Disney rolls out in the march toward its May release, continuing with the film's trailer premiere tomorrow morning.
In the new poster, there’s no denying who the star of the film is: Jolie wears the horned headdress that her green-faced character was famous for in the 1959 animated movie. But it’s her piercing green eyes that force your heart to skip a beat.
Maleficent, which is Jolie’s first on-screen role in three and a half years, opens May 30. Here’s the official plot synopsis: “A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom — and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”
"Maleficient," like the Broadway hit "Wicked," brings to the forefront the backstory of a legendary and possibly misunderstood rogue and is presented through her perspective. Elle Fanning and newcomer Brenton Thwaitesco-star as Princess Aurora and Price Phillip, respectively, with the cast rounded out by Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple, Miranda Richardson, and Imelda Staunton.
The film marks Jolie's second go at playing a baddie, after getting animated as the shape-shifting Grendel's Mother in Robert Zemeckis's stop-motion-capture adventure "Beowulf," a PG-13 film the actress said she wouldn't be taking her own children to see (presumably because they'd then be terrified of their own mother).
Will she let them watch "Maleficent"? We'll see next summer.
"Maleficent" opens May, 30, 2014, but the first trailer hits the web tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT.
